Introducing Henry S. Lash of New Town, Sussex Co, NJ.......................... History of Wayne Co Ohio by Douglass 1878 page 589 Henry Lash was born in NJ, 2-11-1801 in Sussex Co near Newton the county seat. His father was a farmer of German descent with whom he remained until the attainment of his majority. Henry married Miss Nancy Craven of PA. Henry worked with his father for three years following his marriage. He moved west settling first in Paint Twp, about two and a half miles from Mt Eaton with his wife and two small children. Henry's father David Lash purchased a quarter section prior to Henry move to Ohio. In the spring 1825 Henry arrived to find it destitute of every evidence of civilization, save a log shanty, which he had partly built the fall before. The cabin 18x18 of round logs, clap board roof, split log floor one window and one door. David moved Henry all the way from Sussex with a bureau, bed, ect and driving two cows. His father returned to NJ. Henry cleared 10 acres, and for several years could not pay his property taxes of $2.50 and send home to his father for the money. He had 7 children all but one still living. Mr Lash though past 77 years is still in good health. HIs first wife died and he remarried Lucinda Dorland on Sept 25, 1872. Presbyterian Church. - The church of Paintville - now Mt. Eaton - was organized June 20, 1818, with thirteen members. The Rev. James Adams officiated at the organization. To date of June 20, 1872, the church has had five pastors and nineteen ruling elders. The membership at present numbers seventy-eight. The entire number of members received into the church of Mt. Eaton, from its organization to July 4, 1876, is as follows: On examination, 243; on certificate, 166; a total of 409.
