- ↑ Henry and Grace only had the one son, Carl. As an adult the way theytreated him was witnesses by Carl's wife, Mildred. During an interviewwith Mildred she told of an event where Carl was home sick with the flu.Grace called him and said they needed groceries and he was to bringthem. Henry was capable of going himself, but Grace did not want him togo and leave her home by herself and she would not go out into the rain.Carl obeyed, he got out of bed and went in the pouring rain. When heknocked, he was instructed through the door to leave the groceriesoutside and not invited in, because he would spread his germs.
Grace and Henry raised an orphaned nephew to Grace, Harry King. Many werethe times this poor child was beaten with a belt. One example was a timewhen Grace noticed a scratch on her bed. She blamed Harry, who deniedthe act, and beat him with a belt. Later that day, Carl, Harry and Henrywere in the barn doing farm chores together. Henry told Harry he wassorry that Harry had to take that beating, that he himself had scratchedthe bed, but he could not tell Grace that, as he had to live with her. They would not allow Harry to eat anything unless they watched him. IfGrace had to go away to church meetings, she left notes that Harry wasnot to eat anything until her return. When Henry and Grace took Harryalong to visit relatives, they made him wear his best clothes, so itwould look to others like they took good care of him. When Harry wentout to play with the other children, during the visit, and came in withhis clothing dusty, Grace hit him across the face with all her force, there in front of the family. Family members spoke together afterwards, wondering why she did not allow him to wear his play clothes, to come tovisit and play with the other children, instead of putting forth a "goodshow" and ultimate fate for poor Harry King. Mildred told of many otherexamples of cruelty and mistreatment towards Carl and Harry, through theyears
- ↑ "After their marriage March 16, 1918, Henry Harrison Gieseck and GraceRebecca [Randall] Gieseck lived near Summit station. That was wheretheir son Carl Frances Gieseck was born November 7, 1919. When Henryinherited money from his father's estate he used the money for a paymenton a 45 acre farm on Cable Line Road. The house and barn were north ofwhere cable line Road crossed Route 16. The mailbox was at the cornerof Cable Line Road and Route 16. The house was a two-story with tworooms and kitchen downstairs and two upstairs bedrooms. Mildred Gieseckand Harry [Sonny] Gieseck have almost identical photos of the house.
The Cable Line Road wasn't gravelled north of Route 16 and became verymuddy in winter. After it passed Gieseck house it became a lane to farmland owned by Mrs. Margaret Nichols. The front of the Gieseck housefaced the backs of the buildings on David and Bertha Kings farm on Route16, with a field between them. When Carl was old enough to attendschool he walked out the muddy lane and crossed Route 16 to AlwardSchool. The school was located on a triangle of line and formed byRoute 16, York Road and Cable Line Road. Classes were discontinued atAlward School in 1928. The building was converted into a niceresidence, now owned by McClanahan's.
When Henry H. and Grace Gieseck ran into financial difficulties,Henry's brother took over the farm and Frank's son Harry R. lived there.Henry and Grace rented a farm on the York Road owned by Mrs. MargaretNichols of Pataskala. They moved their around 1925. It was the secondfarm on the west side of the Road north of Blacks Road. Henry and son,Carl, farmed the 200 acre farm, which included the acres Mrs. Nicholsowned, that are mentioned above."
