Facts and Events
Henry Dugger was born ca 1797 in Brunswick Co, VA. He is a proven son of Henry and Armon Dugger. Thanks to Judy Luers for data shared on this family. Henry seems to be with his widowed mother Armon for the 1810 census. Either this Henry, or his cousin Henry Dugger (1798) was listed on the 1815 Personal Property Tax list in Brunswick Co, VA. This Henry was about 18 then, the other only 17, so I suspect it is this Henry under study here. He was not listed on the 1816, 1817, 1818 or 1819 tax list. Henry Dugger was named in the August 1816 Court record dividing his father Henry Dugger's estate. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 27 page 142). Henry Dugger was named in the May 1817 Court record dividing his father Henry Dugger's estate. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 27 page 304). I didn't find Henry Dugger on the 1820 census, but he was probably residing with relatives, and probably wherever his widowed mother was living then. Henry Dugger was listed on the 1820 Personal Property Tax List in Brunswick Co, VA, as was his cousin Henry Dugger (1798). I don't know which was which, but one was listed simply as "Henry Dugger", the other with an "F" by his name. On 23 Aug 1820 Henry Dugger obtained a marriage bond in Brunswick Co, VA to marry Anneliza Clayton. Henry's cousin William M. Dugger was the bondsman, and Richard Coleman gave consent for Anneliza to marry. They were married the same day by Minister S. Howell. I'm not sure who Richard Coleman was, but apparently a relative of Anneliza's. "Henry Dugger" was listed on the 1821 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list. I'm not sure if this is the same Henry, or his cousin Henry Dugger (1798), since only one was listed. On 30 Nov 1822 Henry Dugger and wife Ann Eliza, "formerly Clayton" sold their 1/5th interest in the estate of William Clayton, deceased, to William Scarborough. This suggests that William was Ann Eliza's father (or brother). (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 26 page 301). Neither of the two Henry Duggers were listed on the 1822 Personal Property Tax list in Brunswick Co, VA. "Henry Dugger" was listed on the 1823 Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax list. I'm not sure if this is the same Henry, or his cousin Henry Dugger (1798), since only one was listed. On 5 Jun 1823 Henry Dugger and wife Ann Eliza "of Brunswick" sold their rights in the estate of William Hill, great grandfather of said Ann Eliza Dugger, formerly Clayton. They sold their rights to George Stainback. Also named was Priscilla Williams, grandmother of Ann Eliza. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 26 page 43). Neither of the two Henry Duggers were listed on the 1824, 1825, etc Brunswick Co, VA Personal Property Tax lists. Henry Dugger moved to Giles Co, TN sometime between 1823 and 1830. He was listed in Giles for the 1830 census. Analysis:
Henry Dugger was listed on the 1836 Tax List in Giles Co, TN and charged with 1 poll (himself). Henry Dugger was listed on the 1840 census in Giles Co, TN. This census seems to show no one Ann Eliza's age with Henry, so that suggests she died before 1840. Analysis:
Henry Dugger was still in Giles Co, TN for the 1850 census with his apparent daughter Mary Pitts. None of his other children were at home with them.
