Facts and Events
Henrietta E. (Stewart) Brown, daughter of George Washington and Nancy Eliza beth (Wroe) Stewart and wife of William H. Brown, wrote a letter to J. G. Estes, on behalf of her mother in an attempt to determine how her father had fared during the Civil War. According to J. G. Estes, in a letter mailed from Whelan in Davies County, May 22, 1912 to Henrietta E. Brown, he said: "I received your letter yesterday concerning your father, George Washington Stewart. I was a private in your father's company. He was First Lieutenant in Company G, 10th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Adam Johnson's Regiment. I was with him when he was wounded, bu he was taken prisoner and I didn't see him any more for when I came home he was dead. We were sworn into the service on the 4th day of September 1862 at Calebeat Springs, Kentucky. I was with him until he was taken prisoner and that is all I know. Our Captain was Clay Merriweather. I suggest that you contact Thiney Hayden. He is the only one that I know. He and I are the only ones alive now that were from your father's company. I am hoping that this will be of assistance to your mom in getting some of the information that she wants. I remain yours, J. G. Estes |
