George Washington Stewart died November 30, 1863 from wounds that he received relating to the Civil War. He had been home from serving in the Civil War for only one week when he went to his barn to take care of his livestock. He was killed by Yankee Renegades and was found dead outside the corn crib door. He had returned home from the Civil War as a First Lieutenant in the Confederate Army. George Washington had two negro slaves when the outcome of the Civil War freed them, but they wouldn't leave him or his family.

According to J. G. Estes in a letter to Aunt Henrietta Brown on May 22, 1912 from Whalen in Daviess County, KY.

"I received your letter yesterday concerning your father, George Washington Stewart. I was a private in your father's company. He was first Lieutenant of Company G, 10th KY Mounted Infantry. Adam Johnson's Regiment. I was with him when he was wounded, but he was taken prisoner and I saw him no more for when I came home, he was dead.

We were sworn in to service the 4th day of September 1862 at Calebiat Springs, KY. I was with him until he was taken prisoner and that is all I know. Our captain was Clay Merryweather.

Sea Thiney Hayden, he is the only one I know. He and I are the only ones alive now that I know of your father's company.

I am hoping that this will assist your Mom. I remain yours,
    J. G. Estes"

George Washington returned from the Civil War. He was a Confederate. He was First Lieutenant of Company G, 10th Kentucky Mounted Infantry.
