Biography
Heman Lowry Liscum, son and youngest child of Peletiah Day Liscum and Sally (Campbell) Liscum, was born 7 July 1810 in Underhill, Chittenden County, Vermont.[1] He apparently was named for Heman Lowry, who was a sheriff of Chittenden County, Vermont.
When Heman was about three, his father was killed in the War of 1812. His mother was named as his guardian, and Heman was named as one of the heirs in his father's pension.[5][4]
Sometime between 1820 and 1837, Heman moved to Illinois, where he purchased 80 acres of land near Edwardsville on 25 February 1837[20] (He received his Patent, No. 19686, on 1 January 1840,[6] the same day Willard Flagg, brother of Eliza Flagg, received a patent for land nearby).
Heman married Eliza Wait Flagg Bliss, a widow with three children, on 1 June 1838, in Madison County, Illinois, where they continued to live.[7]. Eliza died nearly three years later, on 1 March 1841, and Heman wanted to continue raising her two younger children. Her older brother, Gershom Flagg, however, also wanted Eliza's children and, as a blood relative with greater financial resources, he was granted their custody.[8]
Following the loss of his wife and her children, Heman moved to Wisconsin, where he spent the summer of 1842 teaching in Iowa County.[9] In May of 1843 he sold his land in Madison County, Illinois to his brother Horace[21] and again spent the summer teaching in Wisconsin. Early the following year, on 12 February 1844, he purchased land in Grant County.[19] On 27 April 1845 in Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin, married Sarah Jacobs, a fellow teacher.
Heman and Sarah and their growing family lived in Grant County where Heman farmed.[11][12][13] Heman also served in local public positions, as a Trustee of the Lancaster Baptist Church in 1847, and as Town Clerk and Town Assessor for Lima in 1851 and 1852.[10] About 1865, after the death of his wife Sarah in 1863, Heman moved to Fennimore Township.[22][14][15] In 1878 he sold his farm to his son-in-law Adelbert Bliss,[24] with whom he continued to live.[16]
Heman died 31 January 1883 in Mount Ida, Grant, Wisconsin,[17][18] and is buried in the Mount Ida Baptist Church Cemetery.[17][25]

Probate Office 31 Mar 1841 Gershom Flagg suggests that Willard F. Bliss and Ursula C. Bliss minor heirs had some property coming to them as a gift from him and that they had no Guardian appointed by law. Value of property does not exceed $500. Flagg asked that letters of Guardianship be granted to him. Court ordered decision postponed because there is another applicant for Guardianship, to wit, H. Liscum. Flagg had subpoenas issued for the following witnesses: Lucy Bush, Roena Pierce, Mary Flagg, Harly Pierce, William Harrison Snr, Mary Harrison, Samuel Tanner, __ Smith, Charles Tindale, Volney P. Richmond, James Buck, Andrew Buck, Betsey Washburn, Mary Paddock, Susan Paddock, Elizabeth Newhall, Samuel Miller and Philip Sharp. H. Liscum also had subpoenas issued for John Estabrook, Rosamond P. Scott, Philip Calvin, Isaac Palmer, Pamelia Palmer, Zenas Webster, Parnel Webster, and Elihu Palmer.
Probate Office 23 April 1841 Gershom Flagg and Hermon L. Liscum ready for trial. Liscum agreed that the Indentures heretofore entered into between said Liscum, and Willard F. Bliss and Ursula C. Bliss as apprentices might be revoked in consequence of their illegality, and they were declared null and void by the Court. Strong as attorney for Flagg, Cameron for Liscum. Court heard testimony and decided in favor of Flagg because he is the maternal uncle to said minors. Each party to pay own costs.
