Facts and Events
[edit] Flagg Family BiographyEliza Wait Flagg, fifth daughter and eighth child of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Cutting) Flagg, was born 11 August, 1802 in Richmond, Vermont, and died 4 March, 1841 in Madison Co., Ills. Little is known of her childhood except that she was fond of out-of-door life and occupations, and had a considerable liking for books. She seems to have had no school advantages beyond those of the common schools of her day. She was able, however, aided perhaps by her general reading, to teach a district school in Illinois about 1837 or 38.[1] She was married 3 February, 1825 to Oramel Bliss, of Essex, Vermont. They settled on a farm in the town of Jericho, Vermont, where the eldest child James was born. Within a year or two, however, they were back on the old farm on "Bliss Street," where the husband died 25 May, 1833. In the fall of 1836, the widow and three children moved to Illinois, where they occupied, for a time, a log cabin on her brother Gershom's farm in Madison Co. She married as a second husband, in May, 1838, Heman Liscum, of Vermont, and the augmented family took possession of a small farm near by, which her money had bought.[1] After her death, leaving no issue by her second husband, her three children were taken and reared by her brother Gershom Flagg. She was a woman of strong character and of more than ordinary amiability and intelligence.[1] References
