She was a republican. Lived in Keeper Road until around 1983, when she moved to Kennington in London to live with her daughter, Susie Ryan and her husband Mick Ryan, until she died in 1986.

It is also thought that her family were from Kilkenny, and that there is a hurling connection with that county.

Have checked the 1901 and 1911 census records for 3 Allingham Street, where she lived at the time of her marriage to Joseph Barrett. There is no record of a Smith family living there at that time.
