Helen Haney, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Monday, November 10, 2008 at the age of ninety-one. She was born Helen Odett Campbell on February 2, 1917 in Big Cabin, the daughter of William Ernest and Maude (Lauchner) Campbell. She was a graduate of Big Cabin High School, and a lifetime Big Cabin resident.

In 1935, she married Ted Haney, the love of her life. They established their home in the center of Big Cabin, making their living in ranching and petroleum. While Ted served in the US Army in the European Theater of World War II, Helen cared for their two young sons. Upon his return, they continued with ranching and owned Haney Petroleum, a popular place for townspeople to socialize. After retiring from the petroleum business, she was persuaded by Leonard Rich to help him at Rich's Dept. Store in Vinita, where she continued to work for several more years. She then later helped her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Haney, in the opening of a clothing shop in Vinita.

Helen was known for her amazing zest for life. As a girl, she was an outstanding athlete and a member of the Big Cabin High School Girls' Basketball Team. She taught those skills to her sons, and continued to play basketball into her sixties. In addition to being a business woman, she was an excellent cook, seamstress and homemaker. Helen and Ted opened their home to everyone, which became a frequent gathering place for family and friends. They also opened their ranch, with a special barn dedicated for square dancing. They were members of the Hash 'N Break Square Dance Club for many years, and taught couple's dancing. Helen loved playing games, and was well-known for her competitive streak. She and her husband also loved to travel, and made many excursions with their children, grandchildren and friends. Helen was a gifted artist, and developed many hobbies. She enjoyed textiles, painting and macrame, but was best known for her talent with ceramics, and she enjoyed assisting with crafts at the Vinita Senior Citizens' Center. She was a member of the Vinita Church of Christ.

She is survived by her son, LaRoe Haney, Vinita; five grandchildren: Rick Haney and wife Angela, Tulsa; Tami Hockman and husband Bill, Vinita; Tari Lee and husband Johnnie, Vinita; Tina Adamson and husband Joe, Tulsa; Tiffany Wood and husband David, Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine great-grandchildren: Nathan and Garrett Haney; Austin, Adam and Carolyn Lee; Kassie and Brett Adamson; Josie and Sadie Wood; three sisters: Thelma Hentz and Faye Borgstrom, Big Cabin, and Pauline Lassiter, Tulsa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
