Facts and Events
Grebersmuel is now called Grevesmuehlen. It is located in northern Germany in Mecklenburg, northwest of Schwerin and due west of Wismar, near the coast of the (western arm of the) Baltic Sea. It now has approx. 11,300 residents and is one of the oldest towns in Mecklenburg. It reached city status in the year 1226. It was damaged by a terrible fire in the mid 17th century. The city lies close to the Baltic coast and is surrounded by a beautiful landscape with gently rolling hills, dense forests and lakes. There are archealogical sites dating back to 4500 B.C. Passenger list appears to list Heinrich as "Marie", but I think this is a misrecording. Heinrich and Martha Rehe Sess emigrated four adult sons, Henry, Fred, Johann, and Rudolph, as well as at least two daughters who came with their husbands. (It is not known if they had other children who stayed in Germany.) They came over on the ship J.L. Theirman, landing in New York in November of 1865. The family members seem to have been shoemakers, although in later censuses they list various other occupations. Germans to America (vol. 17, page 3) lists them as passengers this way: Sess, Fr. Age 28, shoemaker with Sophie, age 28 (his wife?) Sess, Heinr, age 34, shoemaker with Friederike, age 33 (his wife?) Sess, Joh., age 32, "lksh" with Rudolpf, age 31 Sess, Marie, age 60, shoemaker [who's this? is this a typo for Heinr?] with Martha, age 59 [geb. Rehe] with Johnne, age 20 [her daughter?] with Sophie, age 17 [her daughter?] Steinhop, Louise [Sess?], age 23 [another daughter of Martha] with Frke, age 12 Steinkop, Heinr., age 25, tailor [husband of Louise] References
