Harriett Toy was born on 3rd April 1870 at Deptford in Kent, in the south-eastern suburbs of London. She was the daughter of Sarah Toy, formerly Hunt, and her husband, Richard Toy, a factory labourer. Harriett appears in the 1871 census living with her parents and siblings at 56 John Street in Deptford. She was baptised at the age of 12 at Christ Church in Deptford.

Harriett's father appears to have died in 1887 and her mother in 1890, both in the Greenwich area. The 1891 census finds Harriett working as a cook at Hove on the Sussex coast, staying with her father's sister Julia Toy, who was a retired lady's maid.

Later that year, aged 21, Harriett married a labourer named Alfred Hopson. He was from Chiswick in the western suburbs of London, which is where they settled. By the time of the 1901 census they had two children, Charles Henry and Harriett Eliza, although Charles Henry died shortly after the 1901 census, aged four.

Alfred died in 1910 aged 47, leaving Harriett a widow at the age of 40. They had been married for about 19 years. She left London and moved to Luton in Bedfordshire, where she appears in the 1911 census boarding with a bricklayer named William John Linney. Shortly after the 1911 census she married William, who was about 12 years older than her. In 1912 they had a daughter, Marie.

Some time between 1912 and 1934 the family left Luton and moved to Leicestershire, where their daughter Marie was married in 1934 in the Barrow upon Soar district. William died in 1937 in the Loughborough district, aged 79. Harriett and William had been married for about 26 years.

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Harriett was living back in London with a family called Jefferies. She later returned to Leicestershire, where she died in 1946, aged 76.
