Alfred Hopson's early life has yet to be researched. He claimed to have been born in about 1863 in Chiswick, Middlesex. He was married in 1891 in the Brentford district (which covered Chiswick) to Harriett Toy, who was from Deptford. They had at least two children together, and appear together in the 1901 census living in Chiswick.

Alfred died in 1910, aged 47. Harriet outlived him by 36 years and married again less than a year after his death.
