  • Harriet married Joseph S. Ritenour on Oct. 16, 1828 in Frederick County, Virginia.
  • Three children were born before the family went west: Margaret E., John, and Georgia Ann.
  • They moved to northwest St. Louis County, Missouri in the 1840's, where Joseph became "a prominent landowner" near Overland (which is a few miles from today's Lambert Field).
  • In the mid-1840's Buck School was established in a one room log cabin near intersection of Lackland and Woodson Road; the first teacher was Thomas W. Goldie from England. The school was combined in 1867 with an African-American school to form a rural school district.
  • Joseph Ritenour died in 1867 and the new school district was named after him and his family.

1830 census for Western District of Frederick County, Virginia: Joseph Ritenour 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-30 and another male 10-15; next door was George Ritenour 60-70, with a wife 50-60 and nine children. George was probably Joseph's father. [In the 1840 census for Frederick County, there is a Margaret E. Ritenour family with eight children, and a William Ritenour next door. [Note that Joseph's oldest daughter was Margaret E.]

1840 census for Shenandoah County, Virginia: Joseph S. Ritenour 30-40 and a female 30-40, and there is another male who is 40-50. There is a male 10-15, a male 15-20 and 6 males 20-30. There is also a male 0-5, a female 0-5 and a female 10-15. It looks like this is the correct family but there is no way to determine who all the other people are.

1850 census for District 82 in St. Louis County, Missouri (Oct. 5): Joseph S. Ritnour, 45, farmer, born Virginia; Harriet, 43, born Virginia; Margaret E., 19, born Virginia; John, 18 (shown as mulatto!), student, born Virginia; and Georgianna, 12, born Virginia.

1860 census for Campbranch Township, Warren County, Missouri (June 27)(PO Warrenton): Joseph Ritner, 45, farmer, born Virginia, and Hariet, 40, born Virginia, and Georgiana, 21, born Virginia are in the household of T. E. Brackeneage, 35, farmer, born Missouri; wife Margaret E., 28, born Virginia; and children born in Missouri - James J., 8; Thomas E., 7; Harriett, 5; Walter B., 3; and Henry P., 1/12.
