She was the daughter of Owen and Lola Simpson Crumrine. On Jan. 12, 1951, Harriet was united in marriage to James Howard Callahan in Chillicothe, Ill. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2008.
She had been employed as a dispatcher at the Chillicothe Police Department and then worked selling boats at Hamm's Holiday Harbor in Chillicothe. Harriet worked her last 12 years at Smurf's Restaurant and Bar in Montrose, Iowa, with her daughter, Dawn. She was known to many as "Mama Smurf."
She is survived by two daughters, Dawn Gaylord and her husband, Darrol and Tina Gibson and her husband, Terry; three sons, Ron Callahan and his wife, De, Bill Callahan and his wife, Janet and Michael Callahan and his wife, Linda; eight grandchildren, Jim Moberg, Sam DeFederico, Mike Gibson, Sara Gibson, Tim Callahan, Jennifer Admire, Sean Callahan and Erica Dringenberg; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, Tara Gibson and Jennifer Eddy; and two sisters, Eudora Klasin and Marjorie Gallop.
