    link HANNAH UPSON, b. say 1638; m. Sudbury 18 June 1659 Edward Wright [NEHGR 53 :359] daughter of Stephen Upson and Elizabeth ____. Elizabeth ___ . She married (2) by 1640 Hugh Griffin (eldest known child b. Sudbury 3 or 16 November 1640). In his will of 5 March 1655/6, Hugh Griffin included bequests to "Elizabeth my wife" and to "Hanna Upson, my wife's daughter by her former husband" [Rodgers 1 :255-56, transcribing Middlesex PR Case #9921]. She married (3) Sudbury 9 November 1657 PHILEMON WHALE {1639, Sudbury} [TG 6:131-41]. She died at Sudbury on 8 November 1688.

    link Hannah's marriage is recorded as Epson and someone unfamiliar with the early handwriting had rendered that as Axtell and others have copied and repeated the error (Pope). Register 1:54 notes that Edmund Wright married Hannah Upson not Axtell. Savage states tells us that Hugh Griggin of Sudbury had, in addition to his children by Elizabeth "Besides Hannah Upson, d. of his w. Eliz. by former h." (2:313). Stephen 1 Upson came from London to Boston on the Increase and was listed as being age 23, occupation sawyer.
