"We have, as aforestated, no proof that this ancestry is correct --- only overwhelming logic." J.S. Guilford

"Although no records for Stephen Upson have been found in New England, several of the passengers on the Increase settled first at Watertown, which was the first residence of many of the settlers of Sudbury, which provides some support for the identification of this passenger as the husband of Elizabeth( __ ) Upson." R.C. Anderson

    link ORIGIN: Unknown.
MIGRATION: 1635 on the Increase (on 15 April 1635, "a sawyer, Steeven Upson," aged 23, was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Increase [Hotten 66]).
FIRST RESIDENCE: Unknown (but see COMMENTS below).
OCCUPATION: Sawyer [Hotten 66]. (In his transcription of the 1635 passenger list, Samuel Gardner Drake misread this as "lawyer," which was repeated by Pope [NEHGR 14:312; Pope 468]; examination of a microfilm copy of the original passenger list confirms that "sawyer" is the correct reading.)
    BIRTH: About 1612 (aged 23 on 15 April 1635 [Hotten 66]).
DEATH: By 1640 (by which time his widow had remarried).
    MARRIAGE: By about 1638 Elizabeth ___ . She married (2) by 1640
Hugh Griffin (eldest known child b. Sudbury 3 or 16 November 1640).
In his will of 5 March 1655/6, Hugh Griffin included bequests to
"Elizabeth my wife" and to "Hanna Upson, my wife's daughter by her
former husband" [Rodgers 1 :255-56, transcribing Middlesex PR Case
    #9921]. She married (3) Sudbury 9 November 1657 PHILEMON
WHALE {1639, Sudbury} [TG 6:131-41]. She died at Sudbury on 8
    November 1688.

link Savage states tells us that Hugh Griggin of Sudbury had, in addition to his children by Elizabeth "Besides Hannah Upson, d. of his w. Eliz. by former h." (2:313). Stephen 1 Upson came from London to Boston on the Increase and was listed as being age 23, occupation sawyer. He no doubt died about 1637 probably in Sudbury. He probably married Elizabeth ___ soon after his arrival and was dead by 1638 since his widow had married Hugh1 Griffin by then. We have, as aforestated, no proof that this ancestry is correct --- only overwhelming logic.
