!DOCUMENTATION Vinland Area History and Methodist Episcopal Church of Vinland, KS Published in cooperation with the Douglas County Historical Society. John was born in Canann, NY in August 1815 and in youth moved with his parents to Michigan, where he farmed until 1857 when he came to Kansas. Mr. & Mrs. Howard were married in November 1836. Their children were Harriet, Frank, John, Lewis D. and Hannah. It is interesting to note that Hannah married Jacob Branson, Jr., whose father was arrested by Samuel J. Jones, the pro-slavery sheriff of Douglas Co, KS, after the murder of Charles Dow in 1855. The Howard Story by Lewis Edward Howard, April 17, 1981, Topeka, KS In 1857, John B., with his wife and 5 children migrated to Kansas Territory, arriving June 14, 1857 in Douglas County, KS, south of Lawrence. The children's names were, John B. JR, Francis (Frank), Harriet, Hannah and Lewis DeWitt, who was 8 yers of age in 1857. Hannah married Jacob Branson, JR., son of the "Free Stater", Jacob Branson, a friend of Charles Dow, who was murdered by Frank Coleman at Hickory Point. Many pages of history have been written about Dow's murder and Branson's rescue. |
