•ID: I0002 •Name: Hannah HOUSTON •Sex: F •Birth: ABT. 1760 in Augusta County, Virginia •Death: OCT 1826 in Greene County, Tennessee •Burial: Greene County, Tennessee •Reference Number: 2 •Note: Hannah Houston's family may have been in what became Greene county, Tennessee before Isaac Baker, Sr? Her father settled there with his family. Acquired large holdings of land, and was probably helpful in Isaac and Hannah establishing their family and holdings. There is a large area of land on the west side of Greene County know as "Houston Valley", today (1998). This is the Houston family out of which came General Sam Houston!

Hannah Houston Baker's will was proven October 1826: To daughters, Polly (Mary) Allen and Rebecca Farnsworth, 2 Negro, Dian and Anderson. Indigent Isaac Baker, Jr, $46.00. Judgment on Martain Cline, $12.00. to son, John Baker, Negro man Ismel. Isaac Baker left a sizeable estate to his wife in 1818. Hannah Baker died eight years later with a much smaller estate. Her estate was mainly three slaves. Who controlled the Plantation? Executor: son-in-law, Daniel Allen. Witness: A. Hunter, Abram Farmer. Dated: 5 August, 1826. Signed Hannah X Baker, her mark.

One may question that Isaac Baker, Jr was left one share, less $600, by his father's will in 1818. His mother left indigent Isaac Baker, Jr $46.00, in her will in 1826. It appears that Isaac, Jr may have had financial problems?

Footnote: Isaac and Hannah Houston Baker had a total of nine children between 1780 and 1800. They were all born in Greene County, Tennessee. They all grew to young adulthood, and they all married in Greene county, Tennessee, over a twenty three period. Just surviving as children in this frontier territory was an accomplishment. My guess is that their mother Hannah, was largely responsible. BB

Hi Byron, I am so glad I hit the right family! Now you have the village they came from in Germany! It has always been my goal to get to the immigrant ancestor and then try to find where they came from in Europe. I have found an Isaac Baker with wife Hannah, but I'm not sure if he is yours. This Isaac is definitely English. I checked all spellings. (My maiden name is Beck which is derived from Becker which in German, of course, means "baker" and last but not least, my Dad was a pastry chef and had his own Bake Shop in Littleton, New Hampshire.) Baptisms begin in 1709. In membership, the largest church in Philadelphia in colonial times was Christ Church. It was originated by the Bishop of London in 1695. I checked the births for all the following counties around Phila: Lancaster, Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Northampton, Lehigh, and Lebanon. No Houston/Hustons and very few Bakers....lots and lots of Beckers but no Isaacs. Philadelphia was the only place I found and the above are those that fit your names. There were other families of the name Baker & Huston. I hope this helps. If nothing else it can eliminate those that don't match. I don't have a lot of Phila. records in my library, but the genealogical society and the LDS library here has a bit more. Good luck. Hazel
