Notes

Isaac Baker married Hannah Houston, daughter of James Houston and Agnes Wilson, ca 1780, very likely in what was to become Greene County, Tennessee. Isaac settled with the Houston and Wilson families on either side of the Nolachucky River where Cove Creek entered, near the crossroads of the Old Kentucky Road and the Old Jonesboro Road. In 1789, Isaac purchased 100 acres of land on the North Bank of the Nolachucky, paying 2 pounds per acre. This was the first year George Washington was President of the United States. Only one year before the Continental Congress ratified the Constitution. In 1790, he purchased 200 acres. In subsequent years he purchased and sold a many tracts of land, including land in Wilkes Co on Hunting Creek.. He operated a ferry across the Nolachucky River known as Baker's Ferry or Baker's Ford. Isaac Baker's home was located very near this location & the ferry operation & tolls, were approved by Court Order. The first road commisioned to be built in Greeneville County by the County commissioners was "A road from Greeneville to Baker's Ferry".
He was active in road building (Turnpikes), built a Grist mill in 1810 on Cove Creek , and was very active in County affairs, serving many times as juror during Court sessions. He also served as a court appointed guardian. In his will he refers to his farm as a "plantation". So, in addition to his toll Turnpike & Ferry, Grist Mill, real estate business, he operated a large plantation on the rich bottom lands bordering the Nolachucky river.
Greene County, Tennessee was formed in 1783. Isaac Baker was taxed on 450 acres of land in 1798, 650 acres in 1800, with two WP, indicating that one of his sons had reached the age of 21. In 1805, Isaac Sr. and John Baker are listed. In 1809, Isaac Sr. shows 1360 acres, 2 WP and 5 BP. Isaac Baker, Jr. is listed as a Poll only, no land. In 1810, Isaac Sr. shows 1600 acres on both sides of the Nolachucky and on Cove and Paint Creek, 2WP and 5 BP. In 1812, Isaac Sr., Isaac Jr., and Jacob are listed in Capt Wilson's District and John Baker and William Baker in Capt. Guin's District. Source: Tax records of Greene Co, TN.
