Marriage 17 May 1713 to Capt. Joseph Morse
Death[2] 4 Sep 1727 Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States

Note the will of John Baxter father of Hannah Baxter where it is clear that in 1717/8 Hannah Baxter is both "Hannah Moss, widow" and mother of Benjamin, John, Thomas, Hannah (now caver), Mehitable and Sarah Dyer. This makes it perfectly clear she was married first to Joseph Dyer and second to Joseph Morse:

"To my grand children & three daus. of my dau. Hannah Moss £20 more out of it, equally at wifes deceas"

"to my grand children Benjamin, John, & Thomas Dyer & they to pay their 3 sisters, to Hannah Carver £30, Mehitable Dyer £20, Sarah Dyer £20"

"Daughter Hannah Moss, widow, to have use of £100 before willed my grand children, her children, in case she want it."

Note the other Dyar children of Hannah Baxter predeceased her. And daughter Elizabeth Dyer is named explicitly as the daughter of Joseph Dyer's first wife in his will.

Disputed Death Date

There are two different death dates identified as belonging to Hannah (Baxter) Dyer, The first is unsubstantiated if applied to Hannah [Baxter][Dyer] Morse and in error if applied to Hannah Frary (see below) once probate records are examined. The second date is confirmed by a photo of the original burial monument and is consistent with probate records of Hannah Baxter's father, John Baxter, and of her first husband, John Dyer. and per the marriage intentions filed for widow Hannah Dyer to Joseph Morse. There can be no doubt which is correct.

Weymouth 19 Sep 1726

Note this Find A Grave memorial[1]) has been removed. This death date is not in Weymouth vital records. Other than the now deleted FindAGrave Memorial there is no record of any such gravestone existing. This date of death is stated Dyar Family for Hannah Baxter without citation. Chamberlain, p. 3:211, and Jacobus, p. 545, both state this is the death date of wife Hannah (Frary) Dyer and completely ignore the fact that Joseph Dyer had a second wife Hannah Baxter (and neither provides a citation). Clearly these last two authors are in error since we know that Joseph Dyer had two wives for he names his daughter Elizabeth daughter of his first wife indicating he was married twice. This memorial is not consistent with Hannah Baxter's second marriage to Joseph Morse and the fact that her father, John Baxter, names her "Daughter Hannah Moss, widow" in his will of 1717/18 (Joseph Morse died 1717). The will of Hannah Baxter's father, John Baxter also names individually all six of her living Dyer children and calling them the children of his daughter "Hannah Moss." Joseph Dyer in his will names "Father Baxter," and "brother Joseph Baxter." This making it abundantly clear that Hannah Baxter in 1717 was both "Hannah Moss, widow" and mother of six living Dyer children. Moreover, the will of Samuel2 White son of Thomas White states: "my sister Hannah Baxter" and "Hannah Dyer, daughter unto my sister Hannah Baxter." Therefore we can conclude that Chamberlain, and Jacobus are clearly in error and Dyar Family's date is unsubstantiated.

Sherborn 4 Sep 1727

This Find A Grave memorial has a photo[2]. Weymouth VRs record the marriage intention of Capt. Joseph Morse of Sherborn with widow Hannah Dyer of Weymouth on 18 Apr 1713. The marriage is reported to be 17 May 1713 by some authors but evidence of the second date has not been seen. That this is the actual burial monument of Hannah [Baxter][Dyer] Morse widow of Joseph Morse is entirely consistent with the available evidence. Joseph Dyer had two wives for he names his daughter Elizabeth daughter of his first wife indicating he was married twice. This memorial is consistent with Hannah Baxter's second marriage to Joseph Morse and the fact that her father, John Baxter, names her "Daughter Hannah Moss, widow" in his will of 1717/18 (Joseph Morse died 1717). Moreover, the will of Samuel2 White son of Thomas White states: "my sister Hannah Baxter" and "Hannah Dyer, daughter unto my sister Hannah Baxter." Several sources, accept this identification, including Cutter, p. 2:1080, Mary Lovering Holman, p. 2:23 Memorial of the Baxter Family, p. 11, and Waldo Chamberlain Sprague who cites the will of her father.

Conclusion

This page has been organized to reflect the marriage to Capt. Joseph Morse, but the death date of 1726 has been left as an alternate but is entirely unsubstantiated.

Note the will of John Baxter father of Hannah Baxter where it is clear that in 1717/8 Hannah Baxter is both "Hannah Moss, widow" and mother of Benjamin, John, Thomas, Hannah (now Carver), Mehitable and Sarah Dyer.

The marriage date of 1683 given by Mary Loving Holman in Stevens-Miiler 2:23 is clearly derived from the date of the first recorded child Hannah Dyer identified in the will of John Baxter. This indicates the demarcation between the children of his first wife and the children of his second wife.

Note below in the will of her father in 1719 she was named Hannah Moss (Hannah Morse). She would have been a widow of her second husband at this time.

Suffolk County Case # 4180 John Baxter of Weymouth 4 Jun 1719 This file contains an image of the will transcribed in Genealogies of the Families of Braintree above. This shows that Joseph Dyer had a second wife Hannah Baxter daughter of John Baxter who was mother to six of Joseph Dyer's living children each individually named by John Baxter in his will. She is called by her father "Hannah Moss, widow" clearly supporting that she married second after Joseph Dyer's death to Joseph Morse. Images of his will are also attached to the profile of John Baxter.
