Personal Family History

The Blanchards originated in France. Guillane Blanchard born in 1590left France and went to Nova Scotia (Acadia). Then at some time in his life he returned to France where he lived out his life and died.

Guillane Blanchard and his wife Huguette Poirier arrived in Acadia from France about 1640, with their son Jehan and daughter Marie andher husband Jerome Guerin. (This story is not documented; however, it is based on the recollections of the Acadian deportees in Belle-isle-en-Mer in depositions taken in 1767. Whereas his son, Jean, is found in the early census of Acadia; therefore, Guillaume will be considered the "Legendary" founder of the Acadian BLANCHARD family. Louis BLANCHARD is noted as being on the sailing ship Saint Jean on a return trip from France to Acadie in 1641. He is recorded as traveling with his wife Hugette POIRIER, their son Jean and his brother-in-law Jean POIRIER)

    Hi Rosie,

I liked the way you decided to handle the Guillaume/Jean Blanchard issue for the CMA 1999 Blanchard reunion. Thanks to you and the committee for the great job you are doing putting this all together! I hope to make it to the reunion but I am not sure I can take the S. Louisiana August weather anymore. After 39 years in Southern California I've grown accustomed to the low humidity.

You asked for our response to your reply to Donald Blanchard so here is mine. When I was in Nova Scotia last September I collected quite an extensive Bibliography on the Acadians (If you are interested, I could send it to you in its entirety). There are two specific sources that mention Guillaume/Louis Guillaume (Jean 's father) that I am including in this mailing. I have not seen either of these mentioned by the current Blanchard genealogists so they may shed some light on the subject.

    (1) The periodical "French Canadian and Acadian Genealogical Review", vol 1, Spring 1968, pp.55-73, by Rev Archange Godbout. This article lists the passengers that came to Acadia from France in 1636 on the St Jehan. This article lists a Louis Blanchard, a wine maker from France. I don't believe it mentioned the name Guillaume. (I don't have a copy of the article with me since we are all packed up and in the process of moving.) Perhaps I (or others) drew the conclusion that he wasLouis Guillaume?

(2)The Book - "Familles Acadiennes; Leopold Lanctot; Tomes I & II, 1994, Ottawa, in French. ISBN-2-89412-003-6. My ability to translate this book may not be totally accurate but he seems to say that Louis Guillaume Blanchard first arrived in Acadia in 1636 on board the St. Jehan. He came over as a sort of contract laborer. He returned toFrance in 1640 and then returned back to Acadia in 1641 on one of three vessels: Le Saint-Francoys, Le Saint- Elie, and La Vierge. At this time he brought his wife, Huguette Poirier, and their son Jehan(Jean), and a daughter Marie who is married to Jerome Guerin. Huguette also brought her nephew, Jean Poirier who was age 20 yrs. Jehan was 25yrs old at the time. ( I purchased this two volume set of books through the book store at St Anne's University in the Southern region near Church Point. I have two regrets with his books. First, he does not cite specific references for his material (but neither does Arsenault), and second, he does not carry the Blanchard line through many generations. Apparently, he was only following his family line similar to what I believe Mr Robichaux did with his work.)
