[26635.ged] The story is told that Green Berry served in the place of one of the wealthy landowners in the area. He was promised that if he did, hes family would be well taken care of while he was gone. He signed up at Cedar Grove Post Office and walked up toward Leeds. His family suffered through hardship, the agreement was not met. Green Berry owned a farm in Cox's Creek in Jefferson/Shelby County near Lake Purdy. There he raised his family of 13 children. He served in the Civil war sometime between 1861-1865 as a Private in the Truss Company, Barberres Battalion of Alabama. He was injured to some degree. He was a gunsmith. He also worded on the railroad tunnel that was cut through the Mountain above Leeds, Alabama. "This information is from the story Travis Franklin heard from his grandfather, John Franklin." |
