    Glenn LaVere Leathers

    Glenn LaVere Leathers, 95, of 206 E. Washington Ave., died at 1:15 a.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 3, 1996, at Jefferson County Hospital.

    A service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Royar officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Open visitation will begin Friday morning at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

    Leathers was born March 23, 1901, in Fairfield, the son of William S. and Grace E. Reed Leathers. He was a lifetime resident of the Fairfield area. He married Rebba Keeler April 27, 1927, in Ottumwa. He farmed for 36 years until retiring in January 1968. He worked for the Hinesley Detective Association as a security guard at American Chain and Cable, and Rockwell in Fairfield for 22 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Clinton Masonic Lodge and Odd Fellows Lodge. He was the first president of the Jefferson County 4-H Fair Board and was instrumental in the purchase of the land and laying out of the first buildings on the Fairgrounds. He also was known as an avid fisherman.

    Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill of Fairfield and Glenn of Cairo, Mo.; two daughters, Betty Keller and Patricia Frieberg, both of Fairfield; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Vera Eklund; a brother and sister in infancy; and two grandsons.
