Reference: Jim Anderson (provided by e-mail on 5-14-1999) providing the fo llowing: "The State of Ohio, Morgan County SS On this 17th day of January in the year 1853, Mary Mingus came personal ly before me a Justice of the Peace within and for said County who being d uly sworn according to law desposes and saith that that (sic.) Luther Ming us in apliant for Bounty land in right of John Mingus deceased who was a p rivate in Captain H. Hickman's Company of the twelfth regiment of Infant ry United States Army, war of 1812 and who died in the service at Buffal o, New York, on or about the 28th day of October in the year 1814. Dep*
nt is the widow of Gideon, a Brother of applicant and also of the said Jo hn Mingus in whose right said land is saught to be obtained, affiant furth er avers that she is acquainted with the said applicant forty years that s he knew the said John Mingus applicant's Brother before he went into the A rmy, that said Luther Mingus was always recognized regarded and hath by th eir parents to be their lawful child and son of the same parents of said J ohn Mingus, that the said Luther Mingus hath no Brother living and no sist er living to the best of affiant's knowledge, that both the Parents of sa id Luther are dead and that the said Luther is to the best of affiant's kn owledge and belief the only surviving heir of John Mingus aforesaid. Signed 13th day of January 1853. It has the same death date for John M ingus. According to James L. Powell, based on information received from Donna Coo k's letter dated March 30, 1983, p. 4, Mary Whipple was probably the daugh ter of Rosvelt and Hannah Whipple; however, no hard copy documentation h as been located proving this relationship. Our first record in OHIO for Gideon is July 24, 1819 in Morgan County. MORGAN COUNTY, OHIO was established by an act of the General Assembly of O hio in 1818...36 electors voted in an election including G. Mingus JULY 24 ,1819 [NOTE: Actual listing is "Pioneers in Bloom in 1819....... (Bloom T ownship) See p. 509 of "History of Morgan Co.," by Robertson (1886). T he above July 24, 1819 would be our first listing of Gideon (4) by na me in OHIO. As Morgan County was established in 1818, we need to search ot her counties prior to 1818....] 1820 CENSUS p. 77 Bld Township (Bloom town?) NOTE the name Whipple. It is believed Gideon married Mary Whipple. NOTES: There are other Gideons "Big Gid" Mingus (5) 1821-1898 of W m. E. (4) but he would only be about 8 years old so it prob. isn't him. Gi deon Whipple Mingus "Little Gid" (5) born 1829 of Gideon (4) would be a ve ry young child. Feb. 6, 1831 Mary Mingus baptized prob. wife of Gideon (4) ... see above.. . March 3, 1832 Moses (3), Luther (4) and Gideon in church. I assume th is is Gideon (4). Apr. 9, 1821 abt. 19 1 aged 50-60 b. 1780-1790 Mary (Whipple) b. abt 1787 abt 53 Gideon said to have died about 1847 According to an e-mail from Jim Anders on (dated 2-16-2001), he provides: "I came up with the death date of abo ut 1847 for Gideon Mingus by going over the records of a series of law sui ts he was involved in concerning the 'Bishop Baptist Seminary.' In the rec ords he starts out as one of the defendants, then later he is mention ed as having died. I have found no estate records for him." DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN, WHERE, HOW GIDEON AND HIS WIFE DIED ????? NOTE: Gideon's son, Gideon Whipple Mingus (5) is found still in Homer Twp ., Morgan Co., Ohio in the 1850 Census. QUESTION: Will LAND RECORDS etc. show Gid W. (5) is still on the SAME LA ND his father lived on ????? If so, this would indicate his father, Gide on (4) had died or moved away. 1850 CENSUS RECORDS NEED Reference: Jim Anderson E-mail (dated 2-16-200 1) regarding the 1850 census: "I have looked for her with no succes s. I do know that, on Jan. 5, 1859, she was admitted to the Athens Coun ty Home. At that time Her home is listed as being Athens Township, Athe ns County. She is 72 years of age, place of birth Vermont. She was "tak en away," on March 5, 1859, by Calvin Mingus." 1860 CENSUS Eagle Twp. Vinton Co., Ohio Mary (Whipple) Mingus age 73 b. V T. is found under her dau.
