Facts and Events
There has been some speculation that Calvin Mingus and John Mingus are t he same person (referred to as John Calvin Mingus). However, accordi ng to Mingus researcher James L. Powell, Calvin Mingus is listed as havi ng died on December 13, 1813. His widow, Elizabeth Lewis, then married h is brother, Luther Mingus (see #16 listed directly below) in August of 181 4. Since John Mingus, according to hard copy documentation (see below und er John Mingus #17a) died on October 28, 1814, it is unlikely that his "wi dow," Elizabeth [Lewis] Mingus would have married his brother, Luther Ming us, in August 1814 as it would have been prior to his death. Reference: James L. Powell provides the following: "Our first Mingus marr iage record in southern Ohio is found in "Early Marriage Bonds of Musking um County, Ohio: 1804-1835," Book I listing that Calvin Mingus married Eli zabeth Lewis on February 21, 1811 and that the wedding was officiated by W illiam Jones. Thus Calvin was 21 (almost 22) when he married. According to records at the Courthouse at Zanesville., Muskingum County, O hio: May 5, 1811 Calvin Mingus bought from David Harvey, the east side of lot # 11, in Zanesville, Ohio, for $250.00. Dec. 26, 1811 Calvin Mingus bought from David Harvey, the east side of l ot # 7, in Zanesville, Ohio, for $1000.00. Mar. 12, 1813 Calvin Mingus sold to David Harvey one lot in Zanesville Vo l. C. p. 550 Calvin lived in Zanesville and was a cabinet maker by trade and is sa id to have also done upholstery work. He had a cabinetmakers shop on L ot No. 11 on the road then called Marietta. Zanesville was a small pla ce then. From an unpublished "Mingus Family History" from Ohio.... Calvin was in t he War of 1812, became sick and started home but died before he got there. He died on the night of De c. 13, 1813. It is sometimes said "He died in the War of 1812." [NOT E: He was about 23 years, six months old and had-been married almost 22 mo nths.] CHILDREN: Levi Valentine Mingus, Mary Ann Mingus According to Probate Court records for Zanesville, Ohio, "Book B, Wills ," at p.119, dated March 30, 1816: William Mingus (4) appointed administra tor of the estate of his brother Calvin (4), deceased. Also mentions Luth er Mingus and others. [NOTE: James L. Powell has a typed copy of this do cument on file, but would be interested in seeing a copy of the original d ocument if someone has it. As Calvin died 1813, this is over two years la ter. It is unknown just why the probate document was issued almost two ye ars after the death of Calvin Mingus. To date, no will has been located f or Calvin; however, such a document would probably go far in proving relat ionships for Calvin Mingus. It is believed that James Lewis be the fath er of Elizabeth and Jape (or John) is her brother. It is unknown at the p resent time just how Joseph Prinyland, who is mentioned in some documentat ion, is related to Calvin Mingus. Luther Mingus is Calvin's brother. Jam es L. Powell notes that he some Lewis family information in his research f iles.] According to Probate Court records for Calvin Mingus, his personal goods a mounted to $61.02 1/2 including an old desk, an old fallen leaf table, fi ve old chairs, one old candle stand, a bedstead and feathers, one spinni ng wheel, iron vessels, one Bible and Calvin's carpenter tools. These too ls were by far the most valuable of the lot, being appraised at $23. Lat er the lot on which stood his little cabin and shop were valued at $1000 a nd duly sold. Elizabeth (Lewis) Mingus, the widow of Calvin Mingus, is believed to ha ve married his brother, Luther Mingus (4), in August of 1814. [NOTE: The re is no documentation to prove or disprove this relationship that has be en found to prove a date or location.] THUS FROM THIS POINT ON, THE FAMI LY OF CALVIN MINGUS WILL BE VERY CLOSELY TIED TO LUTHER WHO BECOMES NOT ON LY THE UNCLE BUT A STEP FATHER TO THE CHILDREN. It is unknown just what date Elizabeth (Lewis) Mingus died. Probably betw een birth of Catherine in about 1827-1828 and 1830. Elizabeth Mingus is n ot listed in the 1830 census and her second husband, Luther Mingus (Calvin 's brother, see notes above), remarried on August 5, 1832. This was in Mu skingum County, Ohio so a death record might be found there. ANY LEWIS HI STORY THAT MIGHT GIVE US THE DATE OF ELIZ. (LEWIS) MINGUS DEATH ? NOT E: No cemetery records at ZANESVILLE before 1895 as all earlier records re cords were destroyed in a fire. James L. Powell provides the following: "I would like to express my appre ciation to Eleanor Martin, for much of the information on Calvin (4) and L evi (5) Mingus lines. Although she was not of Calvin's line, she was mo st helpful in collecting information on it." NOTE: IS ANYONE IN CONTACT WITH ANY DESCENDANTS THAT ARE PRESENTLY WORKI NG ON THE CALVIN MINGUS (4) LINES??? Please feel free to make any additions. If you disagree with any data please add an additonal date or fact rather than replacing or overwriting. Also link your reference which can be viewed to correct the issue later. |
