Facts and Events
From Barnes Genealogies From Church records at Southington, Conn. Rev. Jeremiah Curtis, Pastor Thomas Barnes, Clerk Nov. 2, 1732 Gideon Barnes and Mehitabel Shaw were married. I have the same death dates for this man and his son Gideon. This must be double checked. From: Cornelia Andrus <NiniAndr> I have copies of information from "Sharon, Conn., Probate Records, 1757-1783 Towns of Sharon, Kent, Canaan, and Salisbury" by Donna Valley Russell (Catoctin Press, Middletown, MD, no publ date). This is essentially a book of abstracts of the probate records, the originals of which are in the CT State Library, 231 Capitol Ave., Hartford (per the author). On p. 69 is the following abstract from Book E5: GID(EO)N BARNS of Canaan [place of residence]. Job Barns on behalf of the adx [administratrix Mehitable Barns reported [English pounds] 55 from sale of estate. [English pounds] 45 to widow. Creditors paid 3/9 on [English pound]. (p. 176) [page of book E5 where probate record is located.] I don't have copies of all the page of the book here at home. This appears to be a record of estate administration, not the proving of the will itself. I don't happen to have copied the pages that might have included the will itself, but you apparently already have that. "South and East Canaan, Conn.: Record of Congregational Churches" transcribed by Roland H. Cooke, publ. Oct. 29, 1900, Pittsfield, Mass. (This is available at the Berkshire Atheneum (the Pittsfield, MA library) and, I believe, through LDS.) p. 43 [membership list] Aug. 1776 Wife of Gid'n Barnes Junr from Norfolk p. 61 [church minutes; the punctuation is missing in the first item so it's difficult to understand the context] Dec. 21, 1768 At a meeting legally warned David Holcomb Junr., Gideon Barns Junr., Hezekiah Andrus & John Catting chosen Choristers. Oct. 29, 1770 Gideon Barns added to ye committee above [a committee "to assist the pastor in examining those who are to be admitted members of this church."] From the above references, it is rather obvious that both Gideon Sr. and Jr. lived in Canaan at some point. Since Gideon Sr.'s will appears to have been probated in Canaan, the following record is assigned to him. If in the future it becomes obvious it is his son's, the material is easily moved.
Canaan May 1780 We the subscribers being appointed by Order of the Court of Probate for the District of Sharon to examine the Claims of the Creditors to the Estate of Gideon Barns late of Canaan Decd (dc. estate being represented insolvent) have duly attended the dc. order and find the following Debts due from dc. Estate, awarding to the Estimation of the several Articles in 1774 - viz To Nathan Hale Esq.L7 5 7 To Edmund Grandy 0 6 0 To Elisha Baker 0 5 0 To Joseph Fowler (?) 2 4 2 To Tho. It is possible that Gideon Barns who lived in Caanan was visiting a relative in Hampton and just happened to die there. In which case his probate records would be in the courts of the town (Canaan) where he was a legal resident which would mean they would be found in the Sharon, Connecticut Probate District. The fact that the record was found in the Sharon Probate district does not mean that every record refers to a person living in that town, i.e. Sharon. [just as the present day, probate records are filed in a county seat, not the village or town where the person may have lived]. It just happens that in Connecticut the probate district boundaries have never coincided with county boundaries. References
