George Lewis was baptised on 30th July 1809 at Husborne Crawley in Bedfordshire, son of Martha Lewis, formerly Drinkwater, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a carpenter. Both George's parents died in accidents: his father at a mill accident in 1822 and his mother in being thrown from a cart in 1829.

George married in 1842 to Mary Bushby. They do not appear to have had any children. They lived the rest of their lives in Husborne Crawley, mostly in Crow Lane, with George working as a carpenter. George died in 1891, aged 81.

    1809 / July 30th Lewis Bapt[ize]d George son of George & Mary

It is considered that there is a mistake on this baptism and that his parents' names should have been recorded as Thomas and Martha, not George and Mary. For a discussion on the evidence supporting this theory see the page on the family of George Lewis and Mary Goodman.
