Facts and Events
John Lewis was baptised on 30th June 1805 at Eversholt in Bedfordshire, son of Martha Lewis, formerly Drinkwater, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a carpenter. He appears to have been one of six children. His father died in 1818, when John was only 12 years old. His mother died in 1829, when John was 24. In 1831 John obtained a grant of administration over his late mother's estate, in order to secure for him and his siblings their mother's share of their uncle Thomas Drinkwater's estate. From this grant of administration we know the identities of his siblings, which would otherwise have been difficult to establish as baptisms have not been found for all of them. John appears in the 1841 census living at Husborne Crawley with his wife Sophia and his brother George. They were next door but one to another Lewis family, but the connection (if any) between the families has yet to be established. References
