Elizabeth Lewis was born on 3rd March 1800 at Woburn in Bedfordshire, daughter of Martha Lewis, formerly Drinkwater, and her husband Thomas Lewis, a carpenter. They had married the previous year at nearby Toddington. The family did not stay long in Woburn after Elizabeth's birth, moving on to neighbouring Eversholt by 1805 and then Husborne Crawley by 1818. Elizabeth's father Thomas died in 1818 when Elizabeth was 18 years old. Her mother Martha died in 1829, when Elizabeth was 29 years old.

Elizabeth is referred to in her mother Martha's administration records in 1831, when Elizabeth was described by her brother John as "Elizabeth Hanson his eldest sister", suggesting that Elizabeth had married a Mr Hanson, although this marriage has yet to be found.
