Played fiddle most of his life Listed as Children: (UNKNOWN) Laura, T.A. Moody De Lake City; Edmir <Edwin > Laninia one of his daus m. Lawrence Williams and lived Chicago IL 1930 [Sams.FTW] He obtained a furlough and went home where he became afflicted w/ measles. He was "struck off" the master at Iowa City, but in the fall of 1863 he again enlisted and went down the river to Davenport to New Orleans. There he joined the Iowa City Reg. again. He brother Jonathan was principle musician in the regiment, his father was in a missouri reg., and another brother Edwin was a member of the 5th IA Reb. George enlisted as a private soldier but his musical ability soon made for him a place on the bank, but his other duties were numerous. he was under the command of such generals as Banks, Phil Sheridan, & Sherman. He fought in the Battle of Winchester and was sent to reinforce Sherman's Army in the March to the Sea. It is said that his reg. under Gen. Emery saved the city of Washington D.C. While there they marched thru the streets and past the White House. A large crowd gathered on the veranda. It is said that Pres. Lincoln was among them. He served his country well and re'd an hon. discharge 31 aug. 1865 George Jenks was a public spirited man and in his youth gave his service to his country in numerous ways. His home was one of hospitality. He always had a cheery word and a happy smile. He was a member of Larder Port No. 156 Grand Army of the Republic, Lake City, IA, at dismemberment was made Commander at Large of GMR. Also was a member of the Tri-County Port, no. 1899, VFH. He died 1 jan 1937. Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ, Lake City, IA 4 jan 1937 at 2 pm. Rev. Ray B. Wealsland, asisted by Rev. Fellers of Des Moines, State Chaplin of VFH conducted the SErvice. He was buried in Lake City Cem. |
