Facts and Events
George Haydon was born in 1846 in London, England, the second son of George Haydon and Clarissa Watts. He emigrated to Port Fairy, Australia (then Belfast) in 1853 with his family where he was educated. George trained as a farrier and blacksmith at Yambuck, ten miles from Port Fairy. He returned and worked in Port Fairy as a blacksmith for two years where his father had set up business since 1853, then worked a further four years in Ballarat. After this George moved to Melbourne to work for the agents that had brought out the Goodenough horseshoe. A year later George bought the business which he operated for two years out of Kirk's Bazaar on Bourke Street West. George then continued his trade in New Street and Bay Street, Brighton.
