Ancestors of George G. Gillespie In an obituary for Sarah (Helferich) Gillespie it was stated that her husband George Gillespie was educated at Glasgow University even though he was born in Belfast of Scotch parents. In May of 2003 an enquiry was send to the University, and they replied that a George Gillespie had enrolled in 1821, studied Latin in 1821-1822, Greek in 1822-1823, Logic in 1823-1824, and Ethics in 1824-1825, but there was no record of his graduation. The file also said that he was a merchant in Glasgow, and the 5th son of John Gillespie a minister at Arroquar. Research has shown that John Gillespie was the Minister of Arroquar (also spelled as Arrochar) from 1780 until his death on the 28th of August, 1816. No listing of John Gillespie’s family has been found, but all of these dates fit in with George’s birth date of 1803, and his marriage at Quebec in 1830. Therefore there is some possibility that the George identified by Glasgow University as the son of John Gillespie is the husband of Sarah Helferich.

Educated at Glasgow University and was high standing member of Masonic Order. George and Sarah lived in Perh Ontario for a time then moved to Romney where they were extensive land owners. From there to Mersea.
