14. Col. George3 Davidson (John (Old John) Davidson2 Davison, William1 ) was born 1728 in Ireland, and died 22 Sep 1814 in Iredell Co., NC. He married Catharine Penelope Reese Abt. 1749 in NC, daughter of William Reese and Penelope Groner. She was born 1731, and died 24 Sep 1814 in Iredell Co., NC. Notes for Col. George Davidson: 1748 emigrated from Rockbridge Co., VA.

Robert Stephens Hand says: "George Davidson was a captain commanding the First Regiment of the North Carolina (North Carolina Line) troops from 1 Stp 1775 to 5 Feb 1777, and was to become a major and a colonel of the North Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War. He left Pennsylvania, perhaps Lancaster County, with his parents, a sister and three brothers. They went down the Great "Waggon Road" to Rockbridge County VA (it was then Augusta County VA), where the family spent about ten years. In 1748 they moved on to the Catawba Valley, settling on land which George helped survey, on a creek which becamse known as Davison's Creek, and later Davidson's Creek, in what is now the southern part of Iredell Co NC. John Davidson (he spelled his name "Davison" in Ireland and in Virginia) had applied for the land grant, but died in 1750, and thus did not live to see the grant issued. "A Granville grant of 640 acres in Anson County, dated 23 Nov 1750, was made to George Davidson "on the main Fourth Creek where the path crosses the creek." This land is in the present Iredell County not far from Statesville. It included the land on which "Fort Dobbs" was later built, between the two forks of Fourth Creek and was on what was later called "Sherrill's Path." It is not certain that this was our Col. George Davidson (it could have been his uncle George, father of William Lee Davidson, since this George died in 1760), nor is it certain that either George Davidson ever lived there. Beginning around 1750 many speculators took out land around the present town of Statesville (officially formed in 1790). Our Col. George Davidson was most certainly a land speculator. The writer presumes that our Col. George owned those 640 acres."

Children of George Davidson and Catharine Reese are:

30 i. Judge John D.4 Davidson, born 1750 in Rowan Co., NC; died Bet. 1781 - 1782. He married Nancy Brevard 27 Nov 1779; born Bef. 1757 in Iredell Co., NC; died Bet. 1781 - 1782.

Notes for Judge John D. Davidson:

Much has been written about John Davidson and Nancy Brevard and the Indian attack. Most of it has been disputed, and there is not conclusive evidence that this is the John that married Nancy, or that this couple was killed by Indians.

The stories continue that their daughter Sarah Davidson married Lambert Clayton 14 Dec 1782. There is no doubt that a Sarah Davidson married Lambert Clayton, but many are not convinced it can be a child of the marriage of John Davidson and Nancy Brevard. If John Davidson were only 18 when he was married, his daughter could only have been 14. If his wife, Nancy Brevard were only 14 when married, the theoretical daughter Sarah Davidson could only have been 11 when she married Lambert Clayton.

"On Sarah Davidson Clayton's tombstone in Davidson River Cemetery, Transylvania County, NC, it gives her birthdate as 1759. Her marriage bond is dated 1782. Her first child is Jane Clayton (married an Orr), born 6 Nov. 1783. While Sarah's birthdate could be wrong, she would have to have been born at least by 1764, at the very latest. It is unlikely she was born earlier than 1759 as she had a child born in 1804, her ninth. However when one looks at the Brevard family, it is unlikely that Jean Brevard (wife of John Brevard) would have had a child old enough to be the mother of Sarah born in 1759. Jean Brevard's own birth date can be figured from her tombstone; and she most likely was born in 1725/26. Furthermore, the oldest Brevard children seem to be well documented and there isn't room for Nancy until late in 1750's, making her most certain the same age as Sarah and possibly even younger.

"Certainly the couple of Nancy Brevard who married John Davidson in 1779 was far too young to have been Sarah's parents. There is no way that I can see that would work out. The couple that were killed in 1782 are listed as John Davidson, Anne Davidson, and a six month old child. It also seems unlikely that this couple had a child that survived the Indian attack as some as have claimed. Not enough time between marriage and the killing. So while there is no proof that I know of that links the couple of the 1779 marriage bond with the couple killed in 1782, that is the best guess at this moment. In addition, some Davidson researchers believe the John Davidson who was killed was the son of George Davidson, who died in 1814. If that is so, there is an extensive George Davidson estate file and neither John Davidson or any heirs are mentioned for him."
