Facts and Events
The first appearance of George Jeremiah in the U.S. Census is in 1880, in Fairfax, Franklin, VT where he appears, living with his mother Mary (LENT) 82, six children: George D. 20, Enos J. 18, David Elijah 16, Lydia Luella 13, Lomira A. 10 and Alvarette 7, all born in Quebec. Also living in the household is Sally STARKWEATHER 77, listed as Other under relationship. George's occupation is listed as stone mason. As we know, his 1st wife and mother of his children, Hannah Maria SPEAR died in 1875 in Quebec. For some reason he moved to Fairfax. According to Francine Hart, George J.'s second wife was Eveline C. GRICE and he married her 26 May 1880 in Fairfax, Franklin, VT (apparently subsequent to the 1880 census). Fairfax is where his mother (Mary Lent) was buried and I have seen and photographed her grave. However, I did not find George J.'s headstone in the Fairfax cemetery where I found Mary's. From David Ellis we have the following: George Jeremiah BOOMHOWER married first Hannah Maria SPEAR(S): "Quebec, St. Armand: Methodist Church Records, Marriage George Boomhover of the Township of Farnham, Yeoman and Hanah Spear of the Siegnory of Noyan were married after the due publication of Banns on the second day of February One thousand eight hundred and fifty nine by me F. Hunt Minister. George Boomhower, Hannah Spears, Philip Whitney, Emily Boomhower." In addition David writes: "George BOOMHOWER: George is the last of the missing links born before about 1830. He is a pauper in Sheldon VT. Given the lack of knowledge generally available about such persons, his age at death might be quite a bit in error. It's likely he did not have surviving relatives in the immediate area. I wonder if this is not George Jeremiah whose wife died a month earlier. He may have been thoroughly depressed and unable to care for himself." The question arises, what about his son George D. and wife Anna? They were apparently living in Fairfax which is not far from Sheldon. This is another mystery which needs investigating. References
