Notes [1980] by Barbara TOOHIG for Vivian WOMACK research project: Ella, with little formal education, self-taught herself to a point that people at the newspaper thought she had college. She became one of the first women classified advertising managers in the country, and really did both classified and display dept, but was not given the title because they thought a man should be head of display dept. The man whose name was listed was a wild alcoholic and often could not report for work--let alone do his work. She did it for him. We have pictures of her going up in an airplane--one of the first women to go on some type of sightseeing jaunt in area. She won some kind of voting contest when about 18 years old, where votes came from soliciting donations for some charity or some such; won a nice one-carat diamond. Have picture of that.

At about age 11 to 13 she was given to Dr BOWERS as a form of indentured servant to help pay a large medical bill that her family had incurred. Later on in life she was pretty bitter about it. Her father was more harsh and sometimes cruel to her and the boys. she left home several times because of his conduct but always returned because she felt so sorry for her mother. She always tried to ease her mother along. Dr BOWERS did give her one thing worthwhile--a longing for better education and better conditions. Her family kept her out of school so much she had only the equivalent of a 4th or 5th grade education. She taught herself the rest by study at the public library.
