Garrett Miller, a son of the above (Christian Miller), was the next settler, locating here shortly after the death of his father, in October, 1853, and is a resident of the township (Beaver). He was born in Cambria county, PA, on the 29th of November, 1819, and in 1823 he moved with his parents to Wayne county, Ohio, where he remained ten years. He then moved in Parke county, Indiana, where he was married on the 21st of October, 1851, to Miss Margaret A. Stevens, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Pollard) Stevens. They had three children two died in infancy, one Elizabeth J., only living in August 1857, Mrs. Miller died. He remained a widower until January, 1860, when he was married to Miss Rachel W. Strange. This union was blessed with eight children--Anne C., Mary J., Martha M., Vera V., Fred A., Frankie Fl, Charlie F., and Sidde S. The subject of this sketch came to Des Moines in 1852, and to Beaver township, Guthrie County, in 1853, and built a house on section 33. He came to his present location on section 6 in February 1882. He owns forty acres of land, all of which is under cultivation.

Garrett Miller was born in Cambria county, Pennsylvania on November 29, 1829. Died at the home of his daughter Elizabeth Crawley, March 11, 1914, at the age of 84. He was the last of the family of Christian and Elizabeth Miller. He was married to Margaret A. Stevens on October 29, 1851. To this union was born two sons and one daughter, the sons dying in infancy. He came to this county in 1852 and suffered all the hardships and privations of the early settlers. August 22, 1857, his wife died leaving him with one child, now Mrs. C.T. Crawley on January 28, 1860 he was married to Rachel Strange to them were born 22 children, Ann K. Cabbage, Martha M. Crawley, Vera V. Nelson, Ellie E. Miller, and Siddie S. Johnston. The following having preceded him to the Great Beyond, Martha M. Ella E. Christo O., Isaac E. His wife dying Jan. 12, 1907, leaving him to finish the journey of life alone. There are left to mourn his loss, 7 children, 30 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. For about 20 years he has been almost totally blind, but he bore his affliction with great fortitude and patience. His funeral services were conducted by Rev. L.F. Chamberlain, after which he was laid to rest beside his wife in the Glendon cemetery.
