Fritz Stern worked at the Lack und Farbwerke Stern, A.G., Fulda, (a.k.a. the Lackfabrik), a paint and varnish factory, founded by his father, Max Stern. He worked there along with his brother Simon Stern. When Max died, Simon inherited the plant, and Fritz stayed on to help manage it. Simon and Fritz eventually opened a second plant, 'Pearl Varnish Company, Ltd.', located in the Treforest Trading Estate near Cardiff, Wales. Fritz stayed in Cardiff during World War II.
