Facts and Events
Fredrick was born the second son of Charles Theodore Smith and his wife Josephine Rebecca nee Phelan and was christened Fredrick Ames Smith, after his paternal grandmother's maiden name (Ames). Some time between 1885 and 1900 his parents split up, and may have divorced. He and his younger brother, and their mother, fetched up in Minneapolis sometime around 1900; his sister moved there a bit later. He worked at a variety of jobs, including as a freight conductor on the Great Northern Railway and as a second-hand car salesman and chauffeur. He died of a massive heart attack at the wheel of a car he was driving, chauffeuring some young ladies to or from a party. Only the quick thinking of the girl sitting beside him, who managed to stop the car, prevented a greater tragedy. References
