Christened Courtland James Smith. The family has a story that all "Courtland" Smiths were named after uncles, so he should have an uncle named Courtland, but so far I have found no evidence that this is true.

He was known as Suds, because a glass of beer was never far from his hand, and he developed a serious drink problem. He died as a result of a fall occasioned by being drunk.

He married and for a time worked in a general or dry goods store, possibly the one owned by his mother and step-father. He also married and had four daughters, but his wife left him and when he died his nephew Courtland George Smith was unable to trace his daughters.
