Biography
Frederick James Smilter Sayles, son of Charles and Sarah Ann (Sayles) Sayles, was born on 26 June 1854 in the village of Crookes in Nether Hallam, Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, England. Frederick appeared in an index for the census of 1861 in the household of Charles Sayles in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He appeared on the census of 1871 as a boarder at 17 Harvest Lane, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield. Frederick was a carter in 1871. At the time of his marriage in 1875, he lived on Bellfield Street in Sheffield.
Frederick married Harriet Barlow, daughter of William and Sarah (Laycock) Barlow, on 5 July 1875 at the Church of St. Stephen in Sheffield. Son Charles was born circa December 1875 in Sheffield. Son George was born circa June 1877 in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire. Frederick's son, George Frederick Smilter Sayles, died circa June 1878 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. Frederick was a saw maker between 1879 and 1889. Daughter Ellen was born on 7 April 1879 at 32 Carter Place.
Frederick and Harriet appeared on the census of 1881 with their children Charles and Ellen at 18 Gregory Road, Heeley, Yorkshire, England. Daughter Elizabeth was born in May 1881 in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire. Son Herbert was born on 31 July 1884 in Sheffield. Frederick immigrated to the United States circa March 1888 and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland during a blizzard. He settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Frederick's son, Charles Smelter Sayles, died circa March 1888 in Ecclesall Bierlow. Frederick was a saw maker between 1889 and 1895 Philadelphia. Harriet Sayles's wife and children sailed from Liverpool, England aboard the "Ohio", arriving Philadelphia on 15 September 1889. In 1890, Frederick lived at 21 Hellerman Street in Philadelphia. In 1895, Frederick lived at Penn and Wissinoming Avenue, Tacony, Philadelphia. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1899.
Frederick and Harriet appeared on the census of 1900 with their children Elizabeth, Herbert and Ellen at 7102 Edmund Street, Tacony, Philadelphia. Frederick was a porter in 1900. He purchased real estate for $2500 from John E. Mills on 7 June 1905 at Tulip Street and Friendship Street, Philadelphia. Between 1910 and 1917, Frederick lived at 7141 Edmund Street, Philadelphia. Frederick and Harriet appeared on the census of 1910 with their children Herbert and Ellen at 7141 Edmund Street. Also living with the Sayles were a boarder and Ellen's two children, Beatrice and Robert Mahorter.
On 11 February 1911, the following notice appeared in "The Philadelphia Inquirer":
"JUDGEMENTS In the following list the judgements are against the first named in each case: Sayles, Fred S -- Harriet Sayles. Note. $700.00."
On 24 April 1913, the following notice appeared in "The Philadelphia Inquirer":
"SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N. J., April 23 -- The first election in Seadide Heights, recently organized as a borough, was held yesterday and the occasion was recognized as a holiday. The following candidates were chosen: Mayor. Edward Kramer. Council. Fred Jones. J. milton Slim, Christian Hiering, Fred. J. Sayles, Henry Clark, Henry Kramer, Assessor, J. C. Tindal; Collector, Clyde G. Marcy; Justice of the Peace, Thomas W. Reed."
On 25 February 1917, the following notice appeared in "The Philadelphia Inquirer":
"Thanks for Church Aiders. Philadelphians Helped Seaside Heights Organization
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N. J., Feb. 24. -- At the yearly congregational meeting of the Seaside Heights Union Church, Frederick J. S. Sayles and John Barnes, the latter of Cynwyd, Pa., were elected trustees for three years. The other members are ...
The report for the year showed that $680.95 had been received during the term and $654.60 expended. The debt on the church was considerably reduced during the year. The summer visitors, many of whom reside in Philadelphia and in adjoining towns, were thanked for what they had done in behalf of the church."
On 25 February 1917, the following notice appeared in "The Philadelphia Inquirer":
"SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N. J. -- Large store bldg., fully furnished rooming house, nine rooms and third story. FRED'K SAYLES, 6944 Jackson st., Tacony."
Frederick and Harriet appeared on the census of 1920 at 7126 Hagerman Street, Philadelphia. Between 1910 and 1920 Frederick was a grocer. In 1910, he owned his own grocery store. By 1920, he was a salesman at a wholesale grocery. Frederick's wife, Harriet (Barlow) Sayles, died on 14 August 1920 in Seaside Heights, New Jersey.
Frederick was a janitor in 1921. In 1921, Frederick lived with his son Herbert's family at 6944 Jackson, Tacony, Philadelphia. Frederick James Smilter Sayles died on 22 December 1922 in Philadelphia at age 68.40 An obituary for Frederick was published on 24 December 1922 in "The Philadelphia Inquirer":
"SAYLES. -- Dec. 22, FREDERICK J. S. SAYLES, aged 68. Relatives and friends, also Keystone Lodge, No. 38, S. of B., are invited to attend funeral services, Tues., 2 P. M., at the residence of daughter, 7126 Hegerman st., Tacony. Friends may call Mon. eve. Int. Magnolia Cem."
He was buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Philadelphia.
