Ellen a member of the Spanish War Auxiliary and later became a member of the Calvary Union Church in Runnemede, New Jersey. By 1920, in addition to her own two children Beatrice and Robert, Ellen had taken in Albert Widmaier, born in 1917, as a foster child after the death of his parents.

In 1930, Albert Widmaier was listed as Albert Mahorter, son of Ellen (Sayles) Mahorter, rather than as her foster son. The 1920 census shows that his parents were born in Germany, but since Ellen was listed as his mother, the census taker incorrectly recorded Albert's mother's birthplace. The census shows Robert's father's birthplace as Germany, probably due to confusion with Albert's status as son, rather than foster son. Robert's father, Hugh Watt Mahorter, was born in Pennsylvania.
