Fred worked for a varie ty of firms as a MarineEngineer when he left sea duty including: Mississippi Valley Barge Lin es,Christian Hospital, St. Anthony Hospital, Norberg Mfg. Co., Sykes BrosS.S. Co., Commercia l Barge Lines, West Coast TransOceanic SS Co.,Portland Tug & Barge Co., Federal Barge Lines , American Trading & Prod.,Fulton Iron Whg, Central Barge Lines, A. H. Bull S.S. Co., AGWI Li nesInc., and Moran Towing & Trans Co. In 1952, he was photographedcontributing cashed saving s bonds to the Eisenhower Fund, and the photoand a write-up were used as campaign literature . At the time, Fred was amember of the AFL Machinist Union and employed at the Busch-Sulze r dieseldivision of Norberg Manufacturing Company. He was elected trustee ofMarine Engineer s Dec. 15, 1960. Fred joined the Fleur de Lys Lodge of the Knights of Pythias in Alton, ILin 1917 while he wa s in service, and affiliated with the Wabash Lodge 248in St. Louis in 1921 when he returned t o St. Louis after receiving amedical discharge from the Navy. Fred was a member of St. Paul' s UnitedPresbyterian Church and Brotherhood, Walnut Park Post No. 165, A.L., St.Louis Chapte r No. 1, D.A.V., V.F.W., Marine Engineers and StationaryEngineers Local No. 2. St. Louis City Directories cite Fred as a laborer, Marine Engineer or aStationary Engineer . Fred Graydon was known as a generous man of strongconvictions and intense loyalties. As I 've researched family history, Ihave asked relatives if they ever met my grandmother Florenc e GeorgeGraydon and what they could tell me about her.
