Walter Leroy Graydon was also known as Leroy or Roy. As a boy, he likedto read and enjoyed t he stories about Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. Hehad one year of high school and worked se veral different jobs in St.Louis, including a year as a machinist. When he was 26 years old , hejoined the U.S. Navy on March 30, 1901. He enlisted in Alabama, wherehis brother Edwar d lived at that time. It was during the Spanish -American War. He served on the U.S.S. Olym pia, torpedo boats. He wasChief Petty Officer on Teddy Roosevelt's Presidential Yacht, theMa yflower. Roy Graydon was classified as Chief Machinist mate when he was honorablydischarged from the N avy on March 29, 1905. Roy met Jessie Spears in Brooklyn, NY at her home, when he went with afriend. As she said " I was ironing my father's shirt," and he wassupposed to meet one sister. He asked "What's th e matter with her?" Thatbegan a 3 month courtship, at which time, they became engaged. He ha d 2more years to serve in the Navy. Jessie promised to wait for him. Hereturned and they wer e married on April 27, 1905 by Pastor McCague ofCity Park Branch, the First Presbyterian Chur ch, 250 High St., Brooklyn.Jessie attended public schools No. 7, No. 1 and 15, in Brooklyn . Shegraduated from No. 15 night school as a stenographer and from the CurtisBusiness School , Schermerhorn St. Jessie was secretary to Frank Little,M.D., in 1900; and secretary to Char les A.
