1777-79 Revolutinary War service. Later served 6 mos. in 1781? as "hostler". Signed with mark 1818 pension application in Gallia Co., Oh as "infirm...farmer...limbs being drawn up by rheumatic pains." On personal property tax lists 1782 with Culpeper Co., Va. Listed separately 1787, 1794-95, 1797-1799, 1804 there. "Early settlers in Meigs and Gallia Cos. ... Frederick Hysell, 1804 or 1805" (Ervin's Poineer History of Meigs Co., Ohio, to 1949). Pension issued 9 June 1818:Private in regiment commanded by Col. Taylor of the Virginia line for 2 years. Inscribed on the roll of Ohio at the rate of $8.00 per month, to commence on the 22 of June 1818.

Frederic Hysell was a soldier of the Revolution and came from eastern Virginia to Ohio in 1805 to the lower part of Gallia county, but afterwards moved to Salisbury township, in what is known now as Middleport. He married Nancy Smith, and they had son's and daughters. Mr. Hysell died at a good old age, and his wife died in 1823.

Their children: Edward Hysell lived on a farm in Salisbury township. Catharine, Mrs. Jason Thomas, settled in lower Rutland Township. Elizabeth, Mrs. George Hoppes, lived in Salisbury, near Bradbury. Margaret, Mrs. Anthony Hysell, lived on Thomas Fork. Francis Hysell married Nancy Dodson and lived on a farm on Hysell Run. (p 76) Smith Hysell married Elizabeth Hunter and lived in Salisbury Township. Owen Hysell married Sophia Archer and lived in Salisbury Township. John C. Hysell moved into Rutland Township on a farm on Hysell run. Mr. John C. Hysell enjoyed the confidence of his fellow citizens. He was township clerk seven years and served as justice of the peace for Salisbury eight years and for Rutland twelve years?twenty years entitled him to be Squire Hysell always. He was county commissioner one term, when the court house was built at Pomeroy, and superintended the same. He belonged to the Christian church in Rutland, and was an active, useful elder for many years. His wife was Miss Jane Dailey.

Nancy Hysell, a daughter of Frederic Hysell, was married to Enoch Murray and lived on Thomas Fork. She died in 1892 or 1893.

James B. Hysell, of Middleport, was a ion of John C. Hysell a good citizen, held several responsible offices, was mayor of Middleport, trustee of the Meigs County Children's Home, and held other positions of honor. He died in 1906.

Frederic Hisle was born c1757 in Culpeper Co, VA. His father was Leonard Barnhisle. His mother was Elizabeth Strothers of Gaines. He was married first to a Catherine ______? His second wife was Nancy Smith whom he married c 178_ in Culpeper Co. She was the mother of his 9 children including gr gr gr gr grandmother Jane Elizabeth Hisle Hoppes. Nancy was born in Culpeper Co in 1763. She died in Meigs Co in 1823. Apparently, Frederic married a 3rd time to Susannah Sisson with whom he is buried in Pioneer Cemetary, Meigs Co. He died on July 23, 1838.

Frederic Hisle served in the Revolutionary War. The following is taken from his pension record:

Rank Private Served under Capts John Roberts, James Sumption and Col Taylor, Virginia. Afterwards served 3 months each . . . under Major Strode just before the surrender of Cornwallis. Residence at Enlistment Culpeper Co, VA Date of Application for pension June 22, 1818 Residence at date of application in 1820 Salisbury Twp, Meigs Co Age at date of application - given in 1818, 68 yrs & in 1820, 63 yrs. Remarks: In 1820 his family consisted of a wife, a son 16, a daughter 12. Soldier died June 27, 1838.

State of Ohio Gallia Co, Common Pleas Court June 23, 1818

Frederick Hisel personally appeared, age 68 years, resident of said county and state . . . makes the following declarations in order to obtain the provisions made by the late act of congress entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Navel service of the United States in the Revolutionary War", that he the said Frederick Hisel enlisted in the War in 1777 in Captain John Roberts Company, in Colonel Garlars Regiment. He enlisted in the County of Culpepper, State of Virginia in the Virginia line. He does not remember the number of the Regiment but thinks the buttons on the clothing which they drew were marked the Eighth Regiment. He served two years in said Reg. was then marched back to Culpepper County and was there discharged. after whilch he was called out and served three tours of three months each the last of which was just before the surrender of Lord Cornwallis which tour he served under Major Strode in the capacity of hostler - that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of a pittanic (?) of his country for support and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services. his Signed Frederick X Hisel mark John Thompson June 23, 1818

Frederick Hysel aged 63 years, resident of Salisbuty Twp . . . . declared that in served in the Revoulutionary War as follows; that he enlisted near Thorntons (?) Gap, Virginia and was enrolled in Capt. James Sumptions Company in Col Taylors Regiment in the Virginia line . . . he was honorably discharged 22 months after joining the service he having enlisted for the term of two years all of which will fully appear in his former declaration on which he receives a pension certificate numbered 11550.. . Schedule: l lame horse at the value of $25.00 l cow and calf 12.00 1 sou and 4 shoats 5.00 5 old kitchen chairs 1.25 1 . . . plough 3.00 1 . . . .? 1.50 $47.75

Frederick Hysell was a soldier of the Revolution and came from eastern Virginia to Ohio in 1805 to the lower part of Gallia County, but afterwards moved to Salisbury Township, in what is known now as Middleport. He married Nancy Smith and they had sons and daughters. Mr. Hysell died at a good old age and his wife died in 1823.

1820 Meigs County Census shows name spelled as Hisle.

    On this 22nd day of June 1818 before me the subscriber Resident Judge of the court of
    Common Pleas for the second Circuit of said Court in the State of Ohio aforesaid personally
    appeared Frederick Hisel aged sixty-eight years resident in said County & State who being by
    me first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled "an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land & Naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War":
    that he the said Frederick Hisel in the year 1777 enlisted in Captain John Roberts company in Colonel Taylor's [Francis Taylor's] Regiment he enlisted in the County of Culpeper in the State of Virginia in the Virginia line he does not remember the Number of the Regiment but thinks the buttons on the clothing which they drew were marked the eighth Regiment he served two years in said Regiment was then marched back to Culpeper County and was there discharged after which he was called out and served three tours of three months each the last of which was just before the surrender of Lord Cornwallis [October 19, 1781] which tour he served with Major Strode in the capacity of hostler that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of assistance of his Country for support, and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services.

    On this 25th day of July 1820 personally appeared in Open Court, being a Court of record
    of said County, Frederick Hysel aged sixty-three years resident in Salisbury Township in said County and being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the revolutionary War as follows. That he enlisted near Thornton's Gap in Virginia and was enrolled in Captain James Sumptions[?] Company in Colonel Taylor's [Francis Taylor's] Regiment in the Virginia line, the number of which Regiment he does not recollect, but the buttons born on their coats were No. 7 in which Regiment he served until he was honorably discharged 22 months after joining the service he having enlisted for the term of two years, all of which will fully appear in his former declaration which he received a pension certificate numbered 11550 –
    And I the said Frederick Hysell [sic] do furthermore solemnly swear that I was a resident
    Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner whatever disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war” passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed
