According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, Francis and his wife Elizabeth came from Tingy, Georgia. Francis was reported to have 11 brothers, six of the brothers fought for the North during the Civil War, and six fought for the South. They were reported to have lived and farmed in Midland, Tennessee, near Chatanooga, during the Civil War period.
