Family Legend is that he deserted from military (navy?) and left for U.S.

In the Netherlands men had a Military Conscription from the age of 20 (in 1898. Only in case of brother service or when he was a "breadwinner" men did not have to go. Fokke was born in 1879, so he was 19 in 1898.There were 5 brothers in the Steinberg Family, Normally in this case 2 brothers would have to join in, and because Andreas died young, it would have been logic that Fokko had to go. At the age of 19 he had to subscribe in the "Militia records" in his Parents residence, only he didn't, at least he's not in those records.

The story is that he was in the Dutch Navy, so he should be in Ministerie van Marine: Stamboeken van Onderofficieren en Schepelingen van de Zeedienst but he isn't there either, so it is doubtable that he ever joined the Navy.

Not joining the milition is named desertion or Unauthorized Absence,is an offense and could be punished with 2 years in jail or a penalty. The limitation for an offense like this would be about 3 years, so when Fokko had really wanted to visit the Netherlands, he just could.

According to the shipslist of the s.s. Amsterdam he arrived 16 Apr 1901 and planned to stay with his brother in Rock Valley. As his occupation he gave Laborer. Strange is that his brothers were listed in the "Staat van Landverhuizers" he wasn't.
