Facts and Events
Andreas Petter Steinberg was born in 1840 in a small place named Boge on the Island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. Both his parents died when he was still young so most likely he was raised by family, which was common in Sweden, when there was no family available, he would be in a foster family (This was done by a sort of "reverse auction", where the family who demanded the least pay would become the foster family.) He could have ended up in an orphanage as well, but that was mostly common in the cities, and foster homes was preferred. Than his name: he was known with a few names : Guthenberg was his fathers name, but he didn't took that name as a last name. He took the name 'Steinberg', maybe this was derrived from Stenberg The "berg" part could be pointing ad a certain place (In Dutch "berg" usually is an Hill or a height), Following the naming rules this could be the place he lived and because he kept using this name, it could be the place in stayed most of the time . He also seemed to have used the name Pilegarda, again a Farm name (still existing) maybe his foster parents lived there? At least his mother was born there. He must be still young when he went to sea, most likely from Visby on Gotland, which was an important harbour and Hanseatic town in the Baltic Sea in those days. Early 1865 he turns up in Pekela, which was still an important harbour for sailors in Groningen the Netherlands. Most sailing ships from that area sailed on the Baltic so, maybe he somewhere mustered on a Dutch ship from Pekela or his ship harboured in Groningen or Delfzijl he turnes up in Pekela. His future father in law (Jacobus De Jonge) sailed in 1865/1866 on a ship named Anna Catharina in the Baltic, so maybe they met and Jacobus took the young man home with him. Most of his journeys were to towns at the Baltic Sea and sometimes to the European Mediterranean Sea. On Musterrolls there is a overview of the ships he mustered on, and from a few there there some harbours they sailed to. Image Gallery
