Facts and Events
SURNAME: "JENKIN" was written on Bishop's Transcripts in England; apparently the final "s" was added to the surname after coming to America. Evan and Ann Jenkins, with three children, came to America on the ship Josiah Bradlee in 1850. After settling in Council Bluffs (Mosquito Creek area) Iowa for eleven years, they joined the Homer Duncan Company and arrived in Salt Lake, Utah September 13, 1861. Evan's daughter, Ann, had beautiful red hair. While crossing the plains with the pioneers, Indians came into their camp one day. One of the braves admired 14-year-old Ann's red hair which reminded him of fire and offered several horses to have Ann as his bride. Her father refused saying he had enough horses. Later, Ann was riding one of her father's horses when this brave swiftly rode up and led her and the horse awy from the wagon train. Her father and several of the other men rode after her. In the meantime the Indian chief persuaded the brave to return her to her people.
