Facts and Events
Obit: Estella Rose McLuen “The angel of death has again invaded our community and taken therefrom a wife and mother leaving a family bereft of the one around whom the love and affection of the husband and sons and daughters centered. The awful suddenness of the blow to this family adds to their sorrow. Without warning death stalked in and cut down its victim who had all the appearance of good health and the prospect of long life. Friday evening Mrs. McLuen went to the office of Dr. Thomas to procure some medicine for a daughter, while there she was stricken and became unconscious, never regaining her consciousness. Death ended her suffering a little after noon Saturday. Estella Rose was born in Guthrie Center, March 16, 1869. Her mother was the daughter of Captain and Mrs. William Tracy, who founded the town of Guthrie Center. The mother passed away in 1879, and the family was broken up. In 1889 she was married to John Edward McLuen and to this union was born two sons, Clare and Gail, and two daughters, Ila and Gladys, all of whom were at the bedside of the mother when she passed away. She is survived by her husband and children, her father who resides at Cagon, OK, two sisters Mrs. Taylor Langworthy of Boone IA and Mrs. Josie Timmons of Selma, CA. Her funeral was held at the Methodist church at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Matthews.” (Guthrian, 3/26/1914) The large attendance and the lavish display of flowers was a tribute that attested to the esteem with which the deceased was held by her friends and neighbors in Guthrie Center.
