Obituary entry for Emanuel Schultheiss.
Emanuel "Hip" Schultheiss, 64, veteran Butler County deputy sheriff, died at 4:45am Tuesday in Mercy Hospital of a heart condition. He had been hospitalized since Sunday when he suffered a series of attacks at his home in Monroe. Born in Hamilton on July 14, 1888, he later moved to the Monroe community where he has resided in recent years. Mr. Schultheiss, a veteran of more than 13 years as a deputy in the office of Sheriff Charles A. Walke, was a popular and able county law enforcement officer. He earlier served as a special deputy sheriff during the term of former Sheriff John C. Schumacher. He was appointed a regular deputy on May 31, 1939. Varied Experiences: The experiences of Mr. Schultheiss as he went about the job of enforcing the law and order in Butler County, responding to accident calls and handling the myriad of other duties devolving on a deputy sheriff, were many and varied. He had many thrilling experiences, many close calls, but he never was actually wounded in the line of duty excepting suffering a badly lacerated thumb when the digit was bitten by a person he was taking to Longview Hospital. Mr. Schultheiss was a member of the Church of the Seven Dolors in Monroe, and active member in village affairs. Survivors include his widow, Frances(Fannie); three sons, Richard, also a deputy sheriff, and John, both of Monroe, and Lawrence(Tony), of Middletown; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Mayer and Mrs. Alberta Buckner, both of Hamilton, and Mrs. Sophia Meinburg, of Springfield, Ohio. Requiem High Mass will be held at 9:30am Friday from the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Monroe. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton.
